Ideas That Work
We all can learn from each other. This section is from patients for patients. Please feel free to submit your ideas to us.

In the Hospital
  • Always have a health advocate. You may think that you are in control but you are taking so much pain medication you cannot always look out for yourself. Make sure there is someone who is checking in on you.
  • Bring your own pillow. It always makes you feel more comfortable.
  • Magazines are easier to read when on pain medication. Find out if your hospital has some you can borrow.
  • If you do end up having food at the hospital, always make sure that it meets your dietary needs. Many times the people who do the food don’t communicate directly to the doctors and the wrong food is served to you.
  • Always double-check your medicine before you take it. Even the best hospitals make mistakes sometimes.

At Home
  • Liquids are the very important. Gatorade, Propel, and Smartwater are brands that have been enjoyed by patients for clear liquids that give you electrolytes.
  • When you advance to full liquids and need more nutrition, Slimfast drinks and Carnation Instant Breakfast are low in fat and high in nutrition. Also, Ovaltine tastes great and adds a lot of nutrition.
  • Use Pam or any other spray oil instead of oil or butter when you are cooking. It keeps the fat content in the meal much lower.
  • When you want a treat try fat free NoPudge Brownies. They are available in the Northeast at Stop and Shop, Whole Foods and Trader Joes. They are great! If you can’t find them go to www.nopudge.com
