Genetics and the Pancreas
Advanced genetic studies are reporting insights into DNA abnormalities in genes which cause acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. Recent studies have shown that at least 30% of adult patients with unexplained chronic pancreatitis have mutations in the cystic fibrosis gene. Familial hereditary research studies, which are in a collaborative multi-medical center program across the United States, aim to develop early detection and treatment programs.
