| Advanced genetic studies are reporting insights into DNA abnormalities in genes which cause acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. Recent studies have shown that at least 30% of adult patients with unexplained chronic pancreatitis have mutations in the cystic fibrosis gene. Familial hereditary research studies, which are in a collaborative multi-medical center program across the United States, aim to develop early detection and treatment programs. |

Hereditary Pancreatitis (HP) is a rare genetic condition characterized by recurrent episodes of pancreatic attacks, which can progress to chronic pancreatitis. Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Onset of attacks typically occurs between within the first two decades of life, but can begin at any age. In the United States, it is estimated that at least 1,000 individuals are affected with hereditary pancreatitis. |
